After paying hundreds of dollars for a high-end smartphone you rightly expect it to be free of any serious faults, but it’s increasingly becoming clear the $900 Pixel 4 XL has one.
As Android Police reports, there’s a growing number of Pixel 4 XL owners reporting the glass back on their handset is peeling off. The back panel apparently becomes loose, and as one Reddit user reports, “Its[sic] like the glue is weakening and the parts are slowly separating.” The top right corner seems to be where it first starts, with owners able to get a fingernail into the gap that forms.
Reddit user aCertainTechnician, who claims to be the General Manager of a uBreakFix store, responded to one Reddit thread explaining the cause. “This is caused by battery failure due to faulty connectors. That leads to battery swelling. It is a MAJOR issue with the 4xl series and I don’t understand why Google is not supporting it properly.” Apparently the battery connectors on the smartphone are brittle, meaning they break apart even when the handset is used as expected, and under normal conditions.
One user posted about the problem on the Google Support Forums and included a photo of the glass back peeling off. A Platinum Product Expert responded simply asking them to contact Pixel Support. Although there’s be no further comment publicly, Android Police believes Google is shipping out replacement handsets to those experiencing the problem. So if your Pixel 4 is showing signs of the glass back peeling off, contact Google.
