Lubbock veterans advocates hosting prayer vigil for Ukraine

Area veterans advocates will host a candlelight vigil for the people of Ukraine at 7:15 p.m. Friday at the Monument of Courage at 84th Street and Nashville Avenue.

The event is being organized by City Councilman Randy Christian and veterans advocacy organizations including VFW Post 2466, the Purple Heart, Chapter 0900, the American Legion, Post 575 and the Friends of the Monument of Courage.

The public is invited to bring their cellphones to use as light and to pray for peace as Ukraine faces an ongoing invasion by Russia.

“We are all troubled by the horrendous situation in Ukraine,” said Christian. “This gathering is an opportunity for Lubbock citizens to pray for and honor the brave men and women who are fighting for their country’s independence. The Ukrainians are showing tremendous courage, so it’s only fitting to meet at Lubbock’s Monument of Courage.”

Benny Guerrero, incoming chair of Lubbock’s Veterans Advisory Committee, encouraged the public to attend Friday’s vigil as a show of solidarity.

“Freedom is not just an American trait — it is a gift from freedom-loving patrons,” said “Right now, a recipient of that gift is under attack. Even though we can’t join Ukraine in their fight for freedom, we stand shoulder to shoulder in supporting Ukraine’s fight for freedom at this candlelight vigil.”

Alex Onischuk, director and lead chess coach at Texas Tech, will also be in attendance to sing the Ukraine national anthem plus speak about his knowledge about and love for the country.

Students and individuals who are Ukrainian or have ties to Ukraine are encouraged to attend the event.
