Help Predict the Future With Facebook’s Forecast App

Can you predict whether there will be a second wave of COVID-19 cases in the US this year? Do you think AMC Theatres will file for bankruptcy in 2020? Want to weigh in on the chances of Netflix commissioning a Tiger King spinoff? There’s a Facebook app for that.

From the folks who brought you voice call service CatchUp, connected-couple platform Tuned, and Apple Watch Kit comes Forecast, a community centered around crowdsourced predictions. The invite-only beta app allows members to pose and answer questions while discussing and distilling knowledge.

“People are increasingly searching for information to help them understand what the world might look like tomorrow, next month, and beyond,” Rebecca Kossnick, Facebook product lead, wrote in a blog announcement. “We believe that a community built around predictions is not only a good way to surface crowdsourced wisdom, but may also help to encourage healthier online conversations across a broad range of topics.”

With a focus on the COVID-19 pandemic, the NPE Team is currently recruiting iOS users from North American health, research, and academic communities. However, anyone can visit the Forecast website to view and share projections and discussions; you just can’t join in—yet. Interested folks can join the waitlist by requesting access to Forecast Beta Testers Facebook group and downloading the app.

“Forecast is a place to ask questions and use in-app points to make predictions about the future,” according to Kossnick, who confirmed that all submissions are moderated for clarity. “Forecast has helped our team learn new things from each other and about our world. We hope it does the same for you.” Participants are encouraged to engage in discourse, visit profiles, see their own track record, and “climb the leaderboard” for individual topics.
