Apple has reached a settlement over its problematic butterfly MacBook keyboards, according to a report. That settlement is worth a total of $50 million.
The butterfly keyboards were part of the MacBook lineup that saw some of the worst failure rates to date. Keys would get stuck, some would stop working entirely, and entire keyboards would become useless. The fix required a major repair, replacing the entire top portion of the notebook in the process.
Now, a class-action lawsuit surrounding the problems has resulted in a $50 million settlement, Reuters reports.
The settlement covers customers who bought MacBook, MacBook Air and most MacBook Pro models between 2015 and 2019 in seven U.S. states: California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Washington.
The complaint claims that Apple’s repair program wasn’t suitable because the replacement keyboards often had the exact same issue, although it often took weeks or months to present itself as a repeat problem.
As for how much individual Apple customers can expect, that will depend on the situation. Payouts of $395 are expected to go to people who replaced keyboards multiple times, while $125 is expected to be given to people who replaced one keyboard. $50 is also set to be offered to people who only replaced key caps as part of the issue.
Apple’s keyboards are much more robust now, with the company having ditched the problematic design a couple of years ago.
